SEWU TEMPLE

Sewu temples or Manjusrighra are Buddhist temples built in 8 century and lie about 800m north of Prambanan temple. Sewu temples are the second biggest complex of Buddhist temples after Borobudur temple in Central Java. These temples are older than both Borobudur and Prambanan temples. Though in fact having 249 temples, this temples complex is by the local people called "sewu" meaning a thousand in Javanese language. Some says that the naming refers to the legend of Loro Jonggrang. This complex is administratively located in Sukuh hamlet, Bugisan village, Prambanan district, Klaten regency, Central Java province.
